Does Perfection Mean Less Now?

This week Mark Buehrle accomplished the very rare feat of throwing a perfect game. So rare in fact that's only been done 18 times in baseball history and only 16 times since 1900. On average that's about 7 years for each perfect game.

As we were discussing this at softball it came up that the perfect game sure doesn't "feel" that rare. Based on that average I should have been alive for 4-5 perfect games and probably observed only 3-4 as a sports fan. We started rattling off names and quickly exceeded those numbers. The discussion got me curious so I grouped perfect games by decade and dropped them in a bar chart.

Wow, things really are skewed to the right! There have been 16 perfect games since 1900, but only 4 of them occurred before 1960! So what gives? Well, there are certainly more chances for a perfection now. A longer season, more total teams and the additional 4 teams in the playoffs each year mean many more opportunities. Is that it though or is there more to it?

Jeff Shulman Can Eat a Dick

He's so not pissed abut Cardplayer losing the exclusive rights to cover the WSOP that he needs to keep mentioning it. From ESPN:

Shulman has stirred controversy with his claim that he will throw the bracelet in the garbage if he wins it. "It has nothing to do with [Card Player no longer having exclusive rights to WSOP coverage]," the 34-year-old Las Vegas native said. "It's about my lack of respect for the WSOP and the management here and what they've done to the players. That said, I still wouldn't wear it if I was best friends with them. When I had a chance to win years ago, I said I wouldn't wear it. I'm shocked that people wear those ugly things."

"Jeff generally says and does what he means, so if he says something, I don't doubt he's going to do it," best friend Adam Schoenfeld said. "I just see this as a professional wrestling heel turn, and Jeff's just gonna be the bad guy, so it doesn't hurt anyone."

"If I win, I'll never play at the Rio or WSOP again," Shulman said. "If I win, I'll never play poker again."

Bitter much? GFY Jeff and suck 9th place please.
